Spinners and Felters Fiber CSA

Fiber CSA Membership Benefits

  • Freshly processed fiber year round in a wide variety shipped monthly.  No two months in a twelve month cycle will be the same.  See shipping schedule for types of fiber included in the membership.

  • We will seek out fibers straight from the producers to get as wide a variety of fibers as possible.

  • Freshly processed fibers are easier to work with when spinning and felting than fibers that have sat on a shop shelf for long periods of time.

  • All fibers are guaranteed to have been carded the week they are shipped.

  • Discover the joy of spinning fibers fresh off the carder without the time consuming process of doing it by hand.

  • By receiving a set amount of fiber at a time and knowing that more is on the way, there is no need to horde fibers or purchase an entire fleece.

  • It's the perfect opportunity to try different fibers.

CSA Membership Fiber Guarantee

  • Source labeling will be provided with all shipments.

  • If the animal has a name and it was provided with the fleece, that information will be included with the fiber.

  • Each month members will receive 3/4 pound of the fiber of the month. 2009 Monthly Shipment Schedule

February:   Fall clip from natural colored Icelandic Sheep (the fall clip is the one best for spinning, spring clip is best for felting)

March:  Mill fun run which is a multicolored roving where the colors do not mute.

April:  Beautiful white Corriedale roving ready to spin and dye

May: Let's see the sheen that Lincoln wool has to offer in white or natural colored, member choice or half each.

June:  Fine wool fresh off the sheep from a local commercial breeder who does a wonderful job of keeping his sheep VM free.

July:  Experience the beauty and softness of freshly carded Huacaya Alpaca.

August:  A mill variety pack of four different colors and fiber blends

September through January:  to be announced from the following options:

  • Alpaca straight from the farm in both Huacaya and Suri

  • A mill run which will blend the two types of alpaca fiber to create a wonder spinning blend

  • Romney, Mohair, Shetland, Domestic Merino, Columbian, Llama, Angora rabbit (a blend only), English Luster, Cormo, Polypay, Jacob, Tesswater, Wensleydale,  Specials from local cross bread spinners flocks  are a few of the possible fiber types the mill has access to from local producers.  There are others and as contacts are made, those will be announced in the newsletter.  If a flock's production will not fill all the member orders, one month may contain multiple fiber samples.

Availability will depend on when each shepherd shears and when it can be delivered and processed at the mill.

As you can see from the list of options, at least a two year membership may be needed to actually sample all the possibilities.

A full membership will include just under a pound shipment each  month:      If the shipment does not weigh more than a pound, it can be shipped Priority Mail for a flat rate of $4.95 anywhere in the US, so we are going to figure the membership as  a generous ¾ pound per month.  Special Note:  Fiber contains 20% moisture directly after processing; weights will be approximate.

All fibers are purchased directly from small flocks using sustainable agricultural practices.  All fibers are grown on Michigan farms unless better quality fibers become available from other domestic sources.

Payment will be due on or before the first of the month or a member's credit/debit card can be kept on file and will be billed after each shipment goes out the door.  (The mills preference is for a credit/debit card on file)

One Share Option - All fiber will be shipped once a month, as close to the middle of each month as possible.

Monthly fee:  $30.00 per month for fiber, postage and the newsletter.  Members must commit to at least three months.  Since the newsletter and postage are as big a part of the membership as the fiber, there will be only the one fiber amount available.   A membership can begin with any month's shipment.
